A big HELLO!We are Scott and Jenny Evans and together with our boys, Aaron and Danny, have moved in to the Old Sawmill Inn.We are part of the local family business that runs The Thatch and Billy Budds at Croyde and Cook Island at Mullacott Cross, and are very excited to be in Berrynarbor.

The Sawmill is currently undergoing a full refurbishment which, as these things do, is taking a bit longer than anticipated. At the time of writing, we expect to be open to welcome you all sometime in mid-June, but, Watch This Space.

We should like to thank everyone for their warm welcome and especially Karen for her kind words in the April issue of the Newsletter. We look forward to meeting you all soon.

We should like to thank everyone who very kindly offered their help following the fire at The Globe. Particular thanks to Chris and Wendy for taking mum in for a much needed coffee. We are hoping to have the kitchen open by mid-October.

The Quiz Nights have started again and so far have been very well attended. Everyone is welcome, so join us once a fortnight at 8.30 p.m. to test your knowledge. Next Quiz: Sunday, 7th October.

The next 'All You Can Eat' Night at The Sawmill is on Saturday, 3rd November. Karl and John will be cooking Asian dishes to include Thai, Indian and Chinese. Booking is advised so 'phone 882259 to reserve your table.

Menus at both pubs will be changing before Easter. At The Globe, we are now doing two courses for £5.95 on Sundays at lunchtime [main course and sweet], and at the Sawmill the Carvery on Sunday, at £6.25, will continue to include a free sweet until just before the main season. The Sawmill '2 for 1' and 'All You Can Eat' nights have now finished until the autumn. Quiz nights at The Globe have also come to an end, but will start again in October.

Thank you to those who responded with suggestions when a notice was put up asking for ideas. We are looking into some of them and will display boards/posters to keep you informed. These include a Folk Sing-a-Long Evening, Seniors' Whist and Tea, and Mum and Toddler Mornings in school holidays.

First of all we should like to thank everyone for their cards, flowers and support over the last few weeks. As yet we don't know when Mum [Edith] will move from Plymouth to Barnstaple, and we don't know when she will be able to come home. However, she is having physiotherapy now to get her back on her feet and moving around. She has read all of her cards and remembers everybody, and is keen to get back to Berrynarbor.

Since Karen wrote this piece for the newsletter we have had wonderful news. Edith has progressed well enough to come back to North Devon and is now in the hospital in Barnstaple. Carry on the good work, Edith!

News of Events for October and November:

The Globe

• Quiz Nights will start on Sunday, 5th October and will take place fortnightly. On the 'in-between' Sunday nights, we shall have a Games Night where we play 'killer' at pool/skittles and darts, both start at 8.30 p.m. We have a new menu for bar and dining room and operate Table Service in the Dining Room every night and Sunday lunchtime.
• Wednesday, 5th November Fireworks and Bonfire at Derek's [Sloley Park] - weather permitting. 7.30 p.m. All Welcome. Please support this annual event by attending and by donating some change to the 'Fireworks' Collection tin at The Globe. Afterwards, you are all invited back to The Globe for a jacket potato and hot soup on the house.

The Old Sawmill

• Look out for information of 'All You Can Eat' theme nights. Due to the success of last winter's events, once again we shall be doing Chinese, Indian and this year also Mexican and Italian food. Booking early for these nights is advised. This winter sees a new menu and look at The Sawmill - starting from the 3rd October.

Both Pubs

• It may seem early, but Christmas is just around the corner. We have already started taking bookings, so please enquire if you would like a menu. The Christmas menu is available from 1st to 24th December.

Saturday, 5th April A Day at the Races' - Watch the Grand National in The Globe garden [we are looking into the betting part of it]. Prize for the best hat, Buffet. Tickets for the Buffet £2.50 must be bought in advance. [lf the weather is bad, the event will be held indoors.]

From 1st June The Globe will be open from 6.00 p.m. daily, and from 6th April, the dining room will no longer be table service at week-ends.

Sawmill - 'All you can Eat' theme nights will be back after the season. Carvery will continue every Sunday lunchtime, £6.25. We shall be open 'All Day' [from 12.00 noon] over Easter weekend and Bank Holiday weekends. Saturday mornings and Bank Holiday Mondays we shall also be open for breakfast between 9.00 and 10.30 a.m. served from the carvery.

Both pubs will celebrate St. George's Day [23rd April] by having a selection of English Ales - hopefully up to 7 different ones will be available.

At the Sawmills we are now open all day, serving breakfast from 9.00 until 11.00 a.m., then pub food from 12.00 noon until 9.30 p.m. EVERY DAY through August. Sunday, 1st September, will be our last day for All Day, then back to 12.00 to 3.00 p.m. and 6.00 to 11.00 p.m.

For Entertainment we have 'Balloon Magic' shows every Monday through August, 7.30 p.m. - great for kids and parents too! Saturday nights through August we have Karaoke, with the 10th, 17th and 24th having midnight licence on the bar.

At The Globe we are now open 12.00 noon to 2.30 p.m. and 6.00 to 11.00 p.m. Food daily, 12.00 noon to 2.00 p.m. and 6.00 to 9.30 p.m. Roasts will continue on Sunday at lunchtime.

For Entertainment, the Red Petticoats will be dancing at The Globe at 8.30 p.m. on Thursday, 15th August and on Wednesday, 28th August, the Exmoor Border Morris Dancers will dance at 9.00 p.m.

As usual, we shall be changing the menu for the Winter Season - at both pubs - and hope to have the dining room at The Globe operating as a table service Restaurant by the end of October. Looking forward to seeing you all soon.

NEWS FROM THE SAWMILLS

We hope you had a good Christmas and a happy start to the New Year. You should have recovered from New Year's Eve's festivities by now, but drinking till 4.00 a.m. [or 6.00 a.m. in some cases!] does take its toll - you'll surely agree! The 2 for 1 offer has come to an end, but it will almost certainly be reintroduced in October.

As February is going to be quite a busy month for us, we haven't got too much planned, but it will soon be Valentine's Day and we shall be doing a special menu for the 14th, 15th and 16th - booking is advised.

By now you will all have heard the news that we shall be taking over The Globe at the beginning of February. We are really excited about this new venture and sincerely hope that you will give us your support. Edith and Karl will be your regular hosts, with the rest of us being around from time to time. Don will continue to work in China for the time being, but is looking forward to pulling a pint or two of mild when he returns home every three months. We don't plan any big changes but we do hope to refresh a few activities that have recently not taken place and also introduce some new ones ourselves. If you have ideas of your own, do please let us know we've already had some input from customers, old and new, so thank you for your enthusiasm and support.

We should like to wish Phil and Lynne a happy retirement [!], and look forward to seeing them enjoying life 'on the other side of the bar'.

THE OLD SAWMILL INN

We are now running our Two-for-One offer on bar meals throughout December and January, Monday to Friday, Lunchtime and Evening.

We also have a four-course Christmas Menu available for bookings of up to 60 people, priced at f,9.50 per head, from 1st December until Christmas Eve.

On Friday, 14th December, we have Gary Songhurst and his newly formed band, The Elderly Brothers, performing hits from the '60's.

Friday, 21st December, is our Killer Games Night, including pool, darts and skittles, with prizes on offer. Saturday, 22nd December, will be your last chance to buy tickets for the Christmas Draw as we shall be making it that night, with prizes including a Mountain Bike, a Week-end Away for Two, and, of course, alcohol! We will also be holding a Quiz that night.

We shall be open on New Year's Eve from 7.00 p.m. and there will be a buffet available, karaoke between 11.00 p.m. and 2.00 a.m., with a disco either side. The bar is open until 4.00 a.m. Fancy Dress is option, but there will be a prize for the 'best dressed'! Tickets for New Year's Eve are now on sale.

They think it's all over! Yep, they're right, it is, all bar the shouting! Time to take stock; well time, really.

Sunday lunches are back, but booking is advised and opening times have reduced, although we are open lunchtimes and evenings for food and drinks.

November, December, January and February will see the welcome return of our "2 for 1" offer on Mondays to Fridays, inclusive [starters, snacks, kids and tots meals are not included in this offer]. This has been so popular that we thought we'd carry on the tradition.

The BBC have begun their meetings, which makes you realise how quickly time goes by - 10 years, by golly!

We are holding a tombola regularly to raise money for the Children's Christmas Party, and if you would like details please ask behind the bar, where you can put your names down to participate.

Our Christmas menu will soon be available but is not included in the 2 for I offer. Early bookings for groups is advised.

THE OLD SAWMILL INN

Hopefully, I won't be talking too soon, but we've had some lovely weather during June and July, and although we have had a spell of rain, it seems to have cleared up again now, so let's hope it continues through August. Hope that all is well and that everyone is getting geared up for the six weeks of mayhem, When the kids break up and declare that they are 'bored' after two days off school!

We have been open for breakfasts for a while now and have had quite a few visitors using this facility - occasionally, the odd local pops in for elevenses and a quiet read of the papers. Some mornings we've had the builders making a bit of noise, but this cannot be avoided and they've been working really hard to get the place finished. They are a good fun bunch, which makes it more interesting, although they do drink a lot of coffee!

Don has been home for a few weeks and hasn't stopped doing 'jobs' but we did have a long list for him to come home to! He is also sporting a new, aerodynamic haircut, inspired by his son late one evening when Karl decided it was time for a change so out came the clippers and Karl, Don, Wayne and a Uni friend of Karl's, all got a "No. 2". There was a lot of encouragement, I may add, from Edith, who suggested Don should have a go!

During the summer we have entertainment on several nights of the week: Mondays is Balloon Magic, which is popular with the kids; Tuesdays will be varying Live Entertainment acts during August. Wednesday daytime we are having a Teddy Bears' Picnic Activity afternoon for children between 18 months and 5 years, from 3.00 to 5.00 p.m. All are welcome and we shall be having games, stories and small competitions for the little ones. In the evening, it will be Quiz Night, where for a £l per question sheet, you will have the chance to test your knowledge and raise money towards the children's Christmas Party, as well as the possibility of winning a £10 food/drinks voucher to be redeemed at anytime at The Sawmills. Thursday will see the return of 'Ain't Misbehavin', the female vocal trio who perform a wide variety of favourites, old and new. Saturday will have Starstruck Karaoke, which is always a good night out even if you don't want to sing, watching others is guaranteed a laugh!

THE OLD SAWMILL INN

Hurrah! Summer's here - opening all day, everyday; serving breakfast from 8.00 a.m. until 5.00 p.m. and pub food from 11.00 a.m. until 10.00 p.m; and Sunday roasts on, er, Sunday! Bookings taken between 12.00 noon and 1.30 p.m.

Building work is coming on and will hopefully be finished sooner, rather than later. We are having a patio area built on the front of the pub, so outside seating will still be available, and Karl has been busy in the garden - watching Ground Force for inspiration, no doubt! Wayne has been busy painting and maintaining all things inside and out, and Karen, well she's ensured the smooth running of the whole place whilst looking after her growing family, with help from Grandma Edith.

From mid-July we have entertainment most nights, including Balloon Magic, Jack Daniels and the Famous Drunks, Ain't Misbehaving and Karaoke when its your turn to entertain us! There will be a Quiz once a week and the winning team/person wins a £10.00 food and drink voucher to be redeemed at any time.

Hopefully, we shall have some good weather this summer, bringing much needed visitors to our beautiful part of the countryside/seaside - oh, we are so lucky to live in such fantastic surroundings!

THE OLD SAWMILL INN

Greetings to one and all! Spring is [supposedly] here and all around us are painting, decorating and gardening frenzies - getting ready for the coming season. Let's hope all is well in the countryside by then.

As you may have noticed, some building work has been going on at the front of the pub - we are extending to make more room and hope that the work will be finished by the end of May. However, in the meantime we are open for business as usual, unless there is a sign saying otherwise.

From the 7th April we are open from 8.00 a.m. to 11.00 p.m. every day, serving breakfast from 8.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. and the pub food menu from 11.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m. Why not pop in for breakfast or just morning coffee and read the papers provided, or come for a cream tea in the afternoon, served until 5.00 p.m. Our children's play area will be back as a permanent fixture soon, so mums, you'll have a place to go and meet friends nearby.

Our menu has been re-vamped to include a wider variety of options vegetarian and otherwise - and also half-portions for the younger diners.

On Wednesday, 11th April, 'Jack Daniels and the Famous Drunks' will be playing live for your entertainment and those of you who came to see our live band last year will be pleased to see a couple of familiar faces, including 'Magic Danny' on drums!

We all enjoyed another BBC production and were pleased to contribute a couple of new faces: one who will serve your drinks and the other who will cook your food if you come and visit us - nice legs boys! Here's to next year. What's the theme Gary? Our fish and chip suppers were a great success and we hope to provide them again next year. However, if you can't wait that long, we do take-aways from the pub.

A new arrival will be appearing shortly and on a regular basis as the Sawmills as another member of the family will be going for early walks down to the harbour with big brother pointing out all the interesting things!

Hoping you had a good Christmas and New Year, here we are again to give you an insight as to what we have going on down at the Old Sawmill Inn in the next couple of months. We are running our '2 for 1' offer again through the months of January and February. This offer is available on Monday to Thursday lunchtimes and evenings, except on Wednesday, 14th February when we shall be romancing you with a 3-course Meal Deal compiled especially for Valentine's Day. Bookings are now being taken, so book early to avoid disappointment.

As usual we are doing Sunday Roast Lunches, at just £4.45 and we now also have a 3-course option at £7.95 and a 2-course option for children at £3.00 and tots at £2.00. Booking is advised.

On Friday and Saturday lunchtimes and evenings, we are doing a 3-course meal deal for those who want something a bit special at very reasonable prices - this is as well as our usual pub food menu and specials board.

Winter is upon us again and Christmas is coming fast; time to start organising those get-togethers which revolve around eating, drinking and being merry, all of which can be achieved at The Old Sawmill Inn!

Our Christmas menu is available from 1st - 24th December - bookings are now being taken and a copy of the menu is available on request. If you require any of our facilities, these are also available for you to use during the evening of your party [apart from skittles on Tuesdays and Thursdays]. Or book your party for a night when we already have entertainment laid on:

On Saturday 16th we are having a Karaoke Night where everyone is welcome to come and join in - give us a song or just cheer on those who are brave enough to sing! All ages welcome. We have a supper licence which enables the bar to stay open until midnight for those who have dined on the premises that evening. Children are allowed in the bar until 9.00 p.m. and after this are welcome to use the family room with play area and the pool room.

On Friday 22nd we are having a 'Killer' Games Night which will involve team games using the pool table, skittle alley and dart board. Get yourself a team or come on your own to join with another team. First Prize: a case of lager!

Our Children's Christmas Party will be on Saturday, 23rd December at 3.00 p.m. If you would like your child/grandchild to attend, there is a list behind the bar and a charge of £2.00 per child provides entertainment [balloon show], party food and drink, cracker, a present from Santa and a gift bag to take home. Fundraising and ourselves pay for most of the costs, but a little help ensures a great party for everyone.

On the evening of the 23rd, we are having a Quiz Night - First Prize is a case of lager! Come along in a team or on your own to join with another team.

The Christmas Draw will take place during the evening, of which the first prize is a 14" Colour Television.

We hope to see all of our regular, and hopefully some new, faces over the festive season and all of us at The Old Sawmill Inn wish you a very Merry Christmas.

NEWS FROM THE SAWMILLS

You may have noticed things are changing at the Sawmills. New for 2000, we now have a Children's Certificate which allows children of any age to be in the bar area. The magistrates were generous enough to extend the hours that children can be in our bar area until 10.00 p.m. for the period 1st April to 30th September. During the winter, however, it will revert to the normal granted time of 9 p.m.

We also have two indoor play areas a small area in the 'no smoking' dining room for 1 1/2 to 3 year olds, and a larger play area with climbing and two slides in the room to the left of the bar for 3-8 year olds.

We have also made improvements to our baby-changing facilities and have more highchairs/booster seats, but if needs be, you may bring your pushchair/pram in to your table.

Our menu has been 'spiced up' but it still contains traditional pub meals, and if you can't find what you want on the menu, look at our 'specials' board or put in a request for us to cook it for your next visit - we shall do our best!

From Easter to September, we serve food from 9.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m., but on Sundays, with the addition of our popular plateful of roast [beef, pork or chicken) meals, we serve food from 12 noon to 9.30 p.m. Sorry, we can't open for breakfast on Sundays, but Monday to Saturday our ALL DAY [until 5.30] BREAKFASTS - regular, large or veggie - are going a treat and we even supply a selection of morning newspapers!

As well as the 'specials' on the food counter, look out for the Bar Specials.

There will always be something at a special price, so watch the board.

Entertainment has been intermittent through the winter and recent months, but things really kick-off on 7th July when our entertainment, until 1st September, will be:

• Monday - Balloon Magic, 7.00 - 8.00 p.m.
• Tuesday - Live Band 'Seven Days', 9.30 - 11.15 p.m. Covers include Bryan Adams, Chuck Berry, Stereophonics, Pulp, Manic Street Preachers
• Thursday - Keyboard and Singing Duet 'Eclipse', 9.30 p.m.
• Friday - Disco, 9.00 to 11/11.30 p.m. [the first half hour is especially for kids]
• Saturday - Karaoke, 8.30 p.m.
• Sunday Quiz - Sheets available 6.30 to 10.00 p.m. at £1.00 each. You could win a case of San Miguel!

The bar is open until 11.30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, for 5 weeks starting from Friday, 28th July.

Our aim is to cater for the requirements of our customers [holidaymakers and locals] so if you have any comments or suggestions, we should love to hear them. If you don't want to talk to Karen or one of her team of supervisors and staff, then fill in a 'comments card' and pop it in the box.

We have got lots of ideas and plans which we are still working on, so whatever you suggest may already be in the pipeline, but we need to know what you think in order that we can try to provide what you are looking for.

DECEMBER AT THE SAWMILL INN

Our Christmas menu is available from Wednesday, 1st December until Thursday, 23rd December. If you would like a menu and/or a booking form, please phone 882259. The Christmas menu is available by reservation. 3 course plus coffee and mince pie £12.50 [including cracker and party popper]

• Saturday, 18th Quiz Night, 9.30 p.m. start. Everyone welcome - teams 2-6, 50p per person entry fee

Well done to Wayne, Clive, Nick, Jeff and Neil who organised and took part in a 24-hour pool playing event in October and raised almost £200 for Berrynarbor Playschool [actual amount is yet to be confirmed].

THE OLD SAWMILL INN

Live Music - once a month we shall have live music. The bands for pre-Christmas are:

• Saturday, 18th September: Out of the Blue
• Saturday, 16th [or 23rd October]: Prairie Dogs [date to be confirmed]
• Saturday, 20th November: Parcel of Rogues
• Saturday, 11th December: Slack Alice

Theme Nights - once a month we shall be having a 'theme' night.

October's theme on Saturday, 2nd October is a Mexican Night; 6th November will be an Italian Night and for the 4th December, we shall be having an 'Oceanic' theme featuring a seafood menu. Tables for the Theme Nights are by reservation only. Look out for more details on posters/boards at the pub.

We shall be running various promotions, special offers and competitions every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday night up until Christmas.

Every Saturday, 7.30 to 8.30 p.m., is Happy Hour with lager/bitter from £1.00 a pint and more special prices besides.

For Saturday nights in our Dining Room, we recommend you book in advance. Our Saturday night Supper Licence allows diners to purchase drinks at the bar up to midnight, so tell the taxi driver to come a bit later - no need to rush off at 11.20 p.m., especially if the band is still playing!

SAWMILL'S NEWS

Don, Edith, Karen, Sean, Karl and staff would like to wish everyone a Happy and Prosperous New Year, and thank all of our customers for an excellent '96.

The usual events [and some new ones] and promotion nights held throughout the year went very well, from the 60's Night Party in February to the Leprechaun Night in September, from the St. Patrick's Day Guinness Night to the Bonfire Night Quiz.

We shall be doing lots more this year too, so look out for posters in the pub and in the village [bus shelter and Post Office].

As usual, the Christmas period was a good one, with something on nearly every night - the annual Games Night and Quiz Night, the Christmas Carols Sing-a-Long the Parcel of Rogues, and a new event emerged this year in the form of a Mr. and Mrs. Competition!! It got a bit risque towards the end, but hey, we're all adults! Well done, Alan, for a great idea.

The second annual Children's Christmas Party went very well too and I think all the children had fun. I must thank everyone who helped out, but a big THANK YOU to Gary, Nigel and Mary-Jane for providing the entertainment, to Father Christmas for finding time to drop in, to Edith and Don for providing the food, to Alan for donating gifts, to Berrynarbor Playgroup for the loan of a certain gentleman's red outfit, and of course to everyone who bought raffle tickets and gave money throughout the year to raise funds for the present and sweets.

So, with one year behind us, let's get cracking with 1997.

Coming Events:

• Friday, 14th February - Valentine's Day - book your table [in the bar or dining room] EARLY for this special night
• Friday, 21st February - Wine Tasting - we've got Catherine back for another evening [different wines to try], £3.50 per person. Please let me know in advance if you will be coming, places will be limited.
• Saturday, 22nd February - Quiz Night - everyone welcome. Teams of 2-5, 50p entry per person [funds for Children's Christmas Party 1997].

WHAT'S ON AT THE SAWMILLS

Due to popular demand, the live band 'PANIK' will again be performing at The Sawmills, on Friday, 10th April. As usual, the band consists of professional musicians from top bands such as 'The Kinks'. Come early to get a good seat. Admission free!

The Christmas Party held for the children from Berrynarbor School was a huge success. The food, entertainment and presents were partly funded by raffles and draws held throughout the year. For the children's pleasure, we intend to do the same for them this coming Christmas The fund-raising starts NOW with the Easter Draw, which will take place at approximately 9.30 p.m. on Friday, 17th April [Good Friday]. Please give generously in any way you can throughout the year - your contributions will help to make the children's Christmas a happy one.

WHAT'S ON AT THE SAWMILL INN?

We shall be having live bands playing in the public bar, regularly throughout the winter. Watch for posters giving details.

We have been holding Raffles throughout the summer months, which will now continue in the form of a Christmas Draw. All proceeds are going towards a Christmas Party which we are giving for children attending Berrynarbor School. The Draw will take place on Saturday, 14th December. There are lots of great prizes, including a weekend's Bed and Breakfast for two in Tintagel!

The Christmas Fayre menu starts on Monday, 2nd December - we recommend that you book early to avoid disappointment [especially groups/clubs].

As from the 2nd November, we shall also be having a Disco in the pub every Saturday evening. No admission charge - everyone welcome!

The old water wheel pit has been used by tourists as a 'wishing well'. The money has been donated to the Ilfracombe and Combe Martin Health Centres.
